Baby, you’re one of kind
Guelph milliner among half-dozen local artists to capture a coveted spot at Toronto’s One of a Kind show
March 17, 2006.
Text: By Joanne Shuttleworth. Mercury staff
Aleksandra Stojanovic is brimming with optimism now that her hat-making business seems to be taking off and landing a spot at Toronto’s One of a Kind spring show and sale, which runs March 29 to Apr. 2 at the National Trade Centre at Exhibition Place, is a real feather in her cap.
“I love fashion,” said Stojanovic, who immigrated to Guelph from her native Yugoslavia eight years ago. “My grandmother was a tailor and I inherited lots of vintage hats from her. It was always in my mind to do this.”
Stojanovic runs her business, called Hat Mood, from her home in the city. Her living room has become sewing room, office and now shipping and receiving as ger new web site, www.hatmood.com, can finally process online orders. Stojanovic had been studying law before moving to Canada but dropped her studies to learn language and customs of her new country.
After completing a small business course funded by the federal government and after extensive market research, she and her husband Damir Trninic decided to commit to the business full-time. “We just started international sales,” said Trninic. “We shipped our two first hats to UK this morning.” Stojanovic does her own designing and sewing. Her synthetic, fur-lined hats are made for Canadian winters while her summer scarf-hats allow both protection from the sun and ventilation to keep cool.
Her funky cloche hats, which hark back to the 1920s, are just fun. She’s also starting a line for men and children. This is the 28th year for the One of a Kind juried craft show, which selects some 450 artisans from a sea of applications. It’s billed as offering unique, quality products that are made in Canada.
The other Guelph artisans to have made the cut are:
• Cindy Guild of Guildcraft – The Duvet and Pillow Co.
• Grazyna Jankowska, who makes sterling silver jewelry.
• Steve Robinson of What a Steel!/TrickleDown Water Features
• Marilyn Rootham, of Rootham’s Gourmet Preserves; and
• Paul and Sandra Szewc, of Masterpiece Cabinets
